Our Cause

VOC’s work gives hope to families of children with incurable vision disorders.

VOC has evolved from supporting basic science to driving research that combines gene therapy and stem cell therapy, bringing hope for restoring vision in those with genetic visual impairments.

The foundation's work is crucial because genetic eye disorders have historically been under-funded and under-researched, despite causing over 60% of infant blindness cases.

What is Ocular Albinism (OA)?

Human albinism can be divided broadly into two types, oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and ocular albinism (OA), where “oculo” means eye and cutaneous means skin. These terms were devised in the late 1940s, when medical science was less sophisticated than it is now. The terminology sounds simple, but in reality is probably incorrect, since all forms of albinism have relative deficiencies of pigment in the hair, skin, and eyes. Historically, ocular albinism is an inherited disorder in which the eyes are deficient in the amount of melanin, which gives the eye its color or pigment, while the skin and hair appear normal or near normal in coloration.

We’ve made groundbreaking discoveries

VOC’s founder’s were confident that by using their son’s condition, Ocular Albinism (OA), as a template disease, and upon discovering a treatment or cure for his condition, the same techniques could be applied to identify similar treatments for a number of related vision disorders.

Researchers across the globe, funded by the Vision of Children Foundation, have made groundbreaking discoveries regarding the disease mechanism of genetic vision disorders affecting children.
